Statement of Intent

 Statement of Intent

In order to establish a coherent brand identity of vintage film appreciation across my two front covers and contents pages, I constructed a media text that would appeal to a target audience of culturally-sophisticated 16-25-year-old film lovers, specifically lovers of classic film, a nugget of film history that many educated young people adore. The magazine industry is competitive, but approaching the film magazine with a niche element of film ensures that there is an existing audience ready to sink their teeth into such content. Furthermore, being published by Bauer – a company famous for publishing a range of magazines from Cosmopolitan and Empire – ensures that there is a successful company behind the brand.  I wanted to represent this target audience in a positive light by honouring their passion and knowledge and enhancing that through my magazine and website. Across both covers and contents pages, I used the Maron font for the titles as it has a retro aesthetic that would attract the target audience, aligning with their personal taste. The colours will differ on each cover, matching the colours in the cover image and keeping each issue fresh, but it is the fonts that will remain a constant theme to keep the brand recognisable. Also, the deployment of a call to arms will be used on the front cover to present synergy between the magazines and website. The web address will be written on every cover to form a direct link to the website, where audiences could sign up for a subscription, access more articles or join competitions.

On my front cover, it is aimed at young people but with a focus on retro films, so the magazine will be for those with a pre-existing knowledge, so will be delving into niche topics with elite, recognisable names in the cover lines. The first front cover has a colour scheme of pinks and reds, to compliment the main cover image and create an aesthetically coherent visual experience. Each issue a puff will be deployed to advertise a competition to entice audiences. The main cover line will be a different colour to the supporting to be eye-catching. Comparatively, the contents page will have the same colour and font scheme as the front to emphasise the coherency. Each main cover image will follow the theme of an actor making direct eye contact with camera, attracting the audience, and setting the image with a white background to give a professional look.

Furthermore, the website will continue the vintage beauty through repeating the font on the masthead to enhance the synergy. It will follow the codes and conventions of having a menu bar with access to social medias, home page and other articles. There will be audio clips that provide sneak peeks into upcoming articles. The house-style of Reel Reflections will always be apparent through the images that convey Old Hollywood themes and the fancy fonts.
